A PIONEER IN MEN'S LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES

Esquire was founded in 1933, as the first general-interest magazine for sophisticated men. The magazine has always been a showcase for writers beginning in the 30s with Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Esquire has continued its literary focus by publishing such writers as Tom Wolfe, Normal Mailer, and Gay Talese, who pioneered the so-called New Journalism in the pages of Esquire in the 60s.

A CULTURAL ICON

George Lois, Creative Director for Esquire (1962-1972), is best known for over 92 covers he designed for the magazine. Lois's Esquire covers are considered among the most memorable imagery in any medium, and certainly the most provocative in the history of the magazine industry. Lois's Esquire covers offered a controversial statement on life in the 1960s with subjects including Muhammad Ali, Andy Warhol, Germaine Greer, and Richard Nixon. Initially received as jarring and prescient statements of their time, the covers have since become essential to the iconography of American culture. In 2008, The Museum of Modern Art exhibited 32 of Lois's Esquire covers.

AWARD-WINNING MAGAZINE

Recognized as one of America's top magazines, Esquire has received many recent plaudits. Between 1998 and 2010, Esquire has been a finalist for 53 National Magazine Awards, the publishing industry's highest honor, and has won 14, including the coveted award for "General Excellence" in 2006. In 2010, Editor-in-Chief David Granger was named "Editor of the Year" by Adweek Magazine in its annual "Hot List" issue. In 2010, Adweek honored the magazine's design and fashion staff as "Creative Team of the Year."

Esquire has also been honored with numerous awards for fiction, multiple citations in the Best American Sportswriting, Best American Magazine Writing, and Best American Crime Writing anthologies. The Society of Publication Designers has honored Esquire with 20 gold medals and, in 2001, the society named Esquire "Magazine of the Year." It was listed as one of "America's Most Important Magazines" by the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 2000, and was named one of America's 10 best magazines by the Chicago Tribune in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. In 2010, Esquire was awarded with a James Beard Foundation Media Award in the "Magazine Feature Writing with Recipes" category for the September 2009 feature "How Men Eat."
